There are more elderly people alive than\never before in history. Improvements in public health and chronic disease\nmanagement have resulted in some older people living longer, healthier lives\nwhilst others are frail requiring long term care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incidence of severe traumatic injury in\nolder people is increasing year on year and for many trauma systems the elderly\ncomprise the largest group of severely injured patients. Trauma is no longer\n\u2018The leading cause of death in the first four decades of life\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There doesn\u2019t appear to be a \u2018one size fits\nall\u2019 approach to managing older people in the acute phases of care. Many\nfactors alter early assessment and management, and as a result identifying\nsevere injury in older people is challenging. \nFurther, many clinical guidelines and trauma courses generally don\u2019t\nreflect the physiological changes associated with ageing or frailty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the population continues to age, the\nnumber of severely injured older people is predicted to increase. Nurses and\nother healthcare professionals must enhance their knowledge of \u2018silver trauma\u2019 and\nadapt their care to meet the needs of this patient group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discuss contemporary epidemiology of trauma\nin relation to ageing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
